Academic Research on IPv6 Deployment

The Project

We are part of a research project by SBA Research that aims to measure the extent and process of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) deployment on the Internet. For probing, we send ICMPv6 Echo Requests only.

We are collecting data that is publicly visible from remote systems without resorting to any use of vulnerabilities. We are neither collecting user and login information nor user behavior. We are not trying to break into remote hosts, we solely send ICMPv6 Echo Requests (pings). Beyond, we have advisedly arranged the order of probed addresses and throttled our scan rate to perform very gentle scans and to not intervene in your systems' normal operation.

Opt-out

If you experience any problems due to our scans or have further questions regarding these, please do not hesitate to contact us at ipv6scan@sba-research.org. In case of any problems with our scans, please contact us with technical and operational details of the issues you are facing. We will try to answer as promptly as possible.

Since this research is valuable for the public understanding of IPv6 deployment as a whole we would like to encourage you to allow for continued scans. However, if you would like to be permanently removed from our scans please hand us your IPv6 prefixes that you would like to see excluded.

Thank you for your inquiry and sorry for any inconvenience caused on your side.

Sincerely,
The SBA-Research Scanning Team

At the moment we are scanning exclusively from:
IP:

inet 81.16.152.2
inet6 2a01:190:151a:1::5ba:100

We do not operate nor are we responsible for other machines or scans originating from other subnets.

About Us

SBA Research was founded in 2006 as the first Austrian research center for information security by the TU Wien, the Graz University of Technology and the University of Vienna. In recent years, the Vienna University of Economics and Business, the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and the University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten joined as academic partners.

Through scientific research of information security we develop practical and applicable solutions, while focusing on current issues like cyber security. SBA Research employs approx. 100 people and is by now the largest research center in Austria which exclusively addresses information security. The center is part of the Austrian COMET excellence program (COMET - Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies).
